The countdown to the start of the 6th Athens Music Week has begun! From 22 to 25 May 2024, the largest meeting for the music industry of Southeast Europe, returns dynamically to Technopolis City of Athens and presents from early in the morning until late at night a rich program with a total of 56 discussion panels, presentations, roundtables and speeches, 13 workshops, dj sets, networking events, exhibitions and other special actions! The pulse of the concert action beats in the neighborhood of Kerameikos and more specifically at the Arch Club – Live Stage, Gazi View and Oddity Club, where 38 showcase concerts by exceptional, domestic and international names will take place, creating an urban, festival experience!
The conference program will kick off with a key, introductory discussion that aims to shed light on the role, value and potential of Athens to become an even more active, international hub for music and culture, with the participation of Nikolaos Patrinos (CEO of Technopolis City of Athens), Louka Katseli (Professor Emeritus of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens), Stavros Gasparatos (Curator of Contemporary Music & Mixed Media) and Alex Galinos (Vice President of the Athens Development and Tourism Promotion Agency) coordinated by the Founder and Artistic Director of Athens Music Week, Georges Perot.
The thematic focus of this year’s event is on young creators and their empowerment.
In this context, the free exchange of ideas, knowledge and experiences between 4 artists from different fields – Alkyone, La Chica, Barrice and Saske -, presented by the music company and record label Stay Independent, will provide valuable resources and insider information to emerging musicians to better understand the mechanisms of the music industry. Also, in another panel with a similar philosophy, Ellize, Negros tou Moria, Marios Davelis (Fundracar) and Andreas Lagios (Nightstalker), will narrate, without filters and barriers, how they discovered their passion for music and started their journey, facing challenges head-on and staying true to their vision. At the same time, the dynamic process of a song’s journey from inspiration to release will be openly explored in an interactive workshop by musicians Lefteris Moumtzis, Vasilis Dokakis and Odysseas Tziritas.
For yet another year, Athens Music Week deals with the ever-evolving debate around the relationship between Music and Technology. Where are we in the matter of shaping a comprehensive legal framework around the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the field of music creation? Is AI capable of reshaping the traditional hierarchies and forces of the music industry by giving voice to underrepresented groups of the population? Who are the organizations that make up the international landscape in the field and, really, is there dynamic representation by Greek companies? All these questions and many more related to Music and Technology issues come to light experts from important domestic and international organizations, such as Karajan Institute, Barcelona Music Tech Hub, Italian Music Tech, Music Tech Germany, Orfium, Utopia Music etc.
In addition, this year’s AMW program features panels with social and environmental concerns at the heart of the music industry. The issue of gender equality and the role of men in this effort is part of these discussions, while the healing power of music in the wounds of this world will be brought to the fore through the stories of speakers who have helped strengthen communities active in an Act In Synch initiative to raise awareness and inspire action.
At the same time, this year AMW dives deeper into the urban music culture through a discussion about how rap, hip-hop, reggaeton and trap have conquered the trends for some years now, shaping a new, hot landscape , while Zoi Eskitzopoulou will present the very interesting research entitled “The ecosystem of the Underground Rap scene of Greece” which she conducted as part of her postgraduate studies at the University of Westminster in London.
At the same time, for the third consecutive year, the discussion entitled “The Great Listening” returns, evolving into an informal institution of the event. In it, the popular and influential radio producers, Iliana Stergiopoulou (Nostos 100.6), Xenophon Rarakos (Melodia 99.2), Panagiotis Menegos (En Lefko 87.7) and Michalis Kamakas (Kosmos 93.6), and Markos Frangos firmly in a coordinating role, will try through an interactive way of listening to co-decide whether a song has the potential to become a hit or not. The examination of what can become a hit continues through two interesting discussions about the power and influence of DJs on the musical trends and preferences of the public, rising to the ultimate shapers of taste and success of our musical times.
The educational workshops will be an integral part of the conference part of the event, with more topics, learning opportunities and opportunities for deepening on key issues of the Music Industry, coordinated by experienced market experts. Among them, the artist coach and founder of Artist In Bloom, Magda Cholyst, will teach ways to withstand the difficulties of the music-business world by integrating psychology and neuroscience into her techniques, the Europe In Sync network will conduct an all-day, professional workshop on the topic of music synch in the field of Greek TV productions and virtuoso guitarist Rodney Branigan will transfer his deep knowledge of the beloved guitar in a Masterclass for aspiring players.
Live an urban, festival experience!
After the end of the conference program, the live concert action begins! From early in the evening, Athens Music Week pours into the heart of Kerameikos and in particular on the stages of Arch Club-Live Stage, Gazi View and Oddity Club, setting up a large, imaginary stage on which they will present their special musical ideas and sound proposals, 38 individual, domestic and international names as part of the Showcase concert program.
Among them are the Greek musician – phenomenon Alkyone, the emerging French-Venezuelan star La Chica, the explosive post-punkers AMKA, the fantasy seven from Barcelona La Sra. Tomasa, the Cypriot indie pop-rock composer Freedom Candlemaker, Night In Athens with its dark electro, the dreamy shoegazers Youth Valley, the deep electro Hungarian Freakin’ Disco, the melodic sensibility of 33 Lovers, the restless hip-hop power of DJ Booker & MC Yinka, the hard alt-rockers Loud Silence, the neo-traditional rhythms of Argalios, the multifaceted jazz of great for healing, the Greek-speaking projects of Tony Bluebird and Xanthi and dozens more names waiting for you to discover them!
