From Cultural Memory to Digital Experience: Nea Smyrni’s Living Archive

MESO Events Hub has been appointed by the Municipality of Nea Smyrni to support the communication, public awareness and dissemination activities of “Nea Smyrni: The Learning City, A Cultural Bridge between the Smyrna of Yesterday and Today.”

The project brings together an important part of the city’s historical and cultural memory and makes it accessible through new digital tools and experiences.
Its content includes historical archives, film and photographic collections, a digital cultural repository, an online portal, digital museography, 3D museum experiences and interactive educational material.
The aim is to preserve and organise this material while making it easier for citizens, schools, educators, researchers and wider audiences to discover and engage with the history and cultural identity of Nea Smyrni and Smyrna.

MESO participated in the communication and dissemination part of the project. Our work focused on helping present the project and its content in a clear and accessible way, through editorial material, communication resources and targeted dissemination towards different audiences.

Particular attention was given to communicating not only the existence of the digital platform and its collections, but also the ways in which they can be explored and used by citizens, schools and cultural organisations.

For us, one of the interesting aspects of the project is the way cultural heritage, digital tools and education come together within a single public resource.
The digital dimension allows historical material to move beyond a traditional archive and become accessible to more people, while creating new opportunities for learning, discovery and engagement with the cultural memory of the city.

The project is implemented by the Municipality of Nea Smyrni through the “Antonis Tritsis” Development and Solidarity Programme for Local Government.
